Digital relaunch for one of Germany’s strongest knowledge brands
Client: RTL Publishing; Revenue Stream stern GEO Capital
A visionary brand
For decades, GEO has stood for high-quality, visually impressive and thoroughly researched journalism on the major issues facing our world, from nature and science to society, culture and travel.
With its relaunch, GEO has now also entered a new era in the digital world, with a clear design language, improved user guidance and a technical foundation that does justice to the brand’s appeal. GEO now also has the right digital platform to present content in a way that is both brand-appropriate and future-proof. And that’s not all: GEOlino has also been given a new digital stage, giving young explorers the chance to experience the world of science, nature and technology in a playful way.
Building a strong brand starts with a flexible foundation
Today’s digital offerings must be intuitive to use, powerful and accessible. Users expect quick orientation and clear paths to their goals. As part of the relaunch of RTL Publishing’s brand world, the foundation was laid for a scalable, high-performance and accessible multi-brand architecture. Following the successful relaunch of the stern brand, GEO is now also using this basis for its own digital presence.
With the relaunch, the media company is creating the conditions for sustainable growth in its digital business. The aim is to attract more paying subscribers and successfully position brands such as GEO in a modern, user-centred environment.
Additional functions have been implemented to achieve the strategic goals. A dynamically integrable paywall supports the development of new paid subscriptions. A newly designed newsletter system enables more targeted communication, opens up new target groups and strengthens brand loyalty through curated content that is freely accessible.

Modular design system for digital scaling
The relaunch focused on developing a modular system for design and technology. It strengthens brand identity, reduces operating costs and creates the basis for the rapid and consistent rollout of further offerings. Together with RTL, a flexible framework was created that enables new brand appearances to be launched quickly, with a clear line and high recognition value. We at Factorial helped develop the concept for the system and implemented it technically.
The design elements can be configured specifically for each brand. Tone, colour scheme and imagery are customised, while the technological basis remains stable and maintainable. This reduces operational complexity and facilitates future developments. The result is a system that combines visual independence with technical scalability and marks a central building block for the digital future viability of the entire portfolio.
What makes it special is that the design system not only simplifies the rollout of new brands, but also the entire design process itself. Once the basic layout of a page is in place, it can be switched from a desktop version in light mode for one brand to a mobile version in dark mode for another brand at the touch of a button, including all layout, size, colour and typography adjustments as well as brand-specific details such as logos and teaser variants.
In addition to its design and technological advantages, the system primarily creates economic added value. New brands can be launched much more quickly, with reduced effort in design, development and testing. The modular structure reduces long-term operating costs, as there is no need to maintain redundant components. At the same time, the central design system enables consistent brand management across all platforms and offers maximum flexibility for future adjustments. This turns design into a strategic lever for efficiency, growth and sustainable digital brand management.
GEOlino turns curiosity into a digital experience
GEOlino is GEO’s brand for children and families and stands for playful learning, child-friendly knowledge transfer and the joy of discovery. With topics from nature, science, technology and culture, GEOlino awakens curiosity and promotes an open view of the world. Always age-appropriate, understandable and told with heart.
As part of the relaunch, GEOlino has been made completely freely accessible on the new website without a paywall and without advertising. This gives children undisturbed and secure access to high-quality content, allowing them to explore the wonders of the world at their own pace and with genuine enthusiasm.
